CALL FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF TANER KILIÇ, MEMBER OF KAYIKI AND HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDER

9 June 2017

On June 6, 2017 Taner Kılıç, devoted lawyer, chair of Amnesty International Turkey, founding member of Mülteci-Der and a member of Kayiki network, has been detained in Izmir, Turkey.

We, members of Kayiki, call for his immediate and unconditional release and suspension of all charges. The accusations brought against Mr. Kılıç are vague and non-evidence based.

Taner Kılıç is a respected lawyer who has been defending and advocating human rights for decades. He stood at the basis of various human rights organisations, as well as our Greek-Turkish network on refugee and migrant rights across borders. He is a leading figure in refugee rights advocacy and contributes significantly to the establishment of a human rights based civil asylum system in Turkey. At the same, he has been training and educating lawyers in the field of refugee rights across Turkey.

End death at border now! Respect human life and death!

We, the inhabitants of both sides of Aegean Sea, express our anger and our shock about the thousands of deaths of refugees and migrants in their effort to cross Europe. They are a direct result of the Europe Fortress policy: The sealing of the borders and the lack of any other way for these people to seek protection.

Dozens of tragic shipwrecks have taken place on both sides of the Aegean Sea since August 2012 after the completion of the border fence in Evros, the land borders between Greece and Turkey: In Farmakonisi, in Lesvos and in Samos, near and some along the border river Evros.

Small children, women and men; refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia and Eritrea died in the Aegean Sea and in Evros trying to escape war, poverty and political persecution in their effort to cross the European borders. Their dead bodies were either found near the coastlines either they disappeared in the Aegean. Many of them were never identified, buried in unmarked graves in remote cemeteries and not according to their cultural and religious traditions. Family members who survived are weeping silently for the loss of their beloved. Others are still trying desperately to locate their missing ones.

Mirroring Migration, an independent festival about migration and refugees will take place between the 22nd and 27th of April 2013 in Maastricht on different locations.

The festival will frame migration in its complexity, with its challenges as well as its enriching aspects. It will critically explore the European and Dutch politics of migration, show the human realities of refugees and reflect on the role of Europe in fuelling migration dynamics.

On April 22, kayiki will organise a photo exhibition and discussion. While showing photographs of Fatih Pınar and Giorgos Moutafis on lives and travel of migrants through the Mediterranean, kayiki members Marieke Wissink and Orçun Ulusoy will elaborate on the asylum and migration policies in Turkey and Greece, as well as on the everyday experiences of refugees.

In August 2008, academics, human rights activists and artists from Turkey, Greece, Austria and Germany had meetings on the Greek islands of Chios and in Dikili. The group named itself "Kayiki".
